VEM WebAnalytics

What does it offer?

VEM WebAnalytics allows you to see your recipient activity in Google Analytics. When you turn it on, page hits and more importantly event hits are registered in Google Analytics. You can then use the rich analysis features of GA to produce the graphs and charts you want.

For a backgrounder on Event Tracking in Google Analytics please see here.

What does it track?

The VEM TrackingEvent maps OrganizationName to Category, EventType to Action and EventDetail to Label in Google Analytics. EventType is currently defined as [Link_Click, Profile_View, Profile_Update, Subscription_View, Subscription_Update]. EventDetail contains the click url or the template rendered as a landing page in the other cases.

Turning it on

In order to use Google Analytics you need first to sign up for a free Google account and in Analytics Settings, Create a New Website Profile as below, entering the url for the VEM Monitor site as highlighted in yellow. Once this is created you are allocated a UA-XXXXXXX-X number that you need to use in the VEM Monitor web.config.

After taking a backup copy, open the VEM Monitor web.config file with notepad and locate the yellow highlighted pieces as below. Change trackingEnabled to true and replace  UA-XXXXXXX-X with your specific GA profile identifier. (Be careful not to disturb the quote delimiters)

Start charting

As indicated above VEM Web Analytics registers both page views and event tracking with Google Analytics.

VEM2011 Dynamic Web Analytics

If you wish to support a number of VEM Users using Google Analytics in either the same or different organizations then ONE GA Account is not enough. Starting with VEM2011 v1.1 we have introduced dynamic mapping from GA Accounts to one or more CRM users. You can set this up in the Settings > Extensions > Web Analytics Accounts area.

Once this is set up and Web Analytics is enabled (see above) then for each recipient action on the VEM Monitor site any specific mapped GA Account will be used for registering information with Google Analytics.

VEM2011 Optional Campaign Tracking

You can also use the Web Analytics feature to associate monitored clicked links with the name of the email campaign activity which resulted in this recipient behaviour. Simply add the standard GA campaign querystring parameter with a special replaceable to your VEM E-mail Link. Note: If this link targets another site that has Google Analytics configured this Campaign will be registered there also.
