VEM allows you to configure signing / encrypting of outbound emails.
RFC 2633 S/MIME Version 3 Message Specification specifies the usage of certificates for the signing and encryption of
email messages.
VEM Secure Email
VEM Secure Email Providers are designed to integrate with the native CRM Email Router, but override standard behaviour to support secure email communication.
Nowadays there are many applications for additional security on email. Unlike postal (and indeed fax) communications which are mostly 'tamper-evident', email is very easy to intercept and
modify without trace.
Signing (and optionally encrypting) emails gives the recipient confidence that the sender is known, reliable and trustworthy, and that their communication has not be altered. Encryption takes it a
step further...
VEM Secure Email has been designed to be easy to set up and use. It is indeed transparent to CRM email activities. It requires only that you first acquire an inexpensive suitable
certificate from one of the likes of Comodo, Thawte or Verisign. You might even decide to get different certificates for signing and encryption.
These certificates should then be stored in the Personal store for the user under whose identity the CRM Email Router service runs in order they can be found by the VEM
secure sender. Similarly, the VEM secure receiver adds any incoming recipient certificates to Other People store for the same user.
The VEM Secure Email Configurator is used to override SMTP (outbound) and POP3 (inbound) profiles setup by the native Email Router configuration tool. So you should choose to setup
different profiles to allow using both secure and insecure email channels.
You will notice that the VEM secure sender also allows you to change the CRM's base64 encoding and add a plain text part to your messages, which reduces the likelihood of triggering SPAM
filters. Should you not specify a serial number for encrypting, or not have a suitable recipient certificates the message will be sent signed only.
